In Loving Memory of Late Ghunusa Devi
 b. 1920 - d. 2008
Srimati Ghunusa Devi was born in a small village in Dah Beseria to Murali Satra in 1920. She had very little formal education and was married at a tender age to Late Shri Kesab Chandra Barthakur, a renowned Mouzader of that period, spending most of her life in Polofield, Bamun Gaon(Tezpur). She was my maternal grandmother (Aita) and most of the memories that I have of her begin from my early childhood. She always showered her immense love and care without any expectations. Her selfless love and care for human beings epitomizes her and has formed guidelines of humane qualities for several of her surviving family members, including me. Apart from being a housewife in a joint-family of about forty, she also actively involved herself in weaving (Tat-Kshal).
Her virtues and ways made her the adorable person that she was. She nurtured her children and have rendered them very well in with strong values and moralities. She had an everlasting smile, eyes filled with kindness and a heart as innocent as a baby. Today, each one of her offspring are quite successful as living examples of positive, helpful and good natured human beings. Aita went through a very tough time, when her husband died, her youngest son was only 6 months old at that time and lived the live of a true widow following every ritual and norm that was expected of her. Despite her old age she kept her childlike enthusiasm alive making her likeable by everyone. She finally breathed her last at her polo field bamun chuburi residence in the hands of her eldest son,
At Tezpur, in the early morning hours of May 6th,2008. She was 88 years old when she passed away. Aita, left behind a legacy for her near and dear ones, far greater than what she might have perceived. she lived her life gracefully having no regrets. She was a pious Lady, and was related to Tezpur Barika Suburi namghar in may ways. Aita is survived by her two sons, four daughters, grandchildren, great grand children and a host of relatives. She will be missed by all and shall be loved for ever.

Rongali Bihu celebrated in Toronto Monday, May 05 @ 19:10:06 MDT by mkadmin2 (8 reads) | Anonymous writes "GUWAHATI, May 1 – The Asom Sangha, Canada, celebrated Rongali Bihu on April 19 at the Malton Community Centre, Mississauga, Ontario. The event witnessed a large gathering and enthusiastic participation of the Assamese families and individuals based here in Canada.
Asom Sangha Canada, established in 1971, is the oldest Assamese organisation in North America. The annual Bihu celebration that started with a mere three families in 1971 has gone on to touch the lives of over hundreds of Assamese Canadians who have since settled here.
This year marked the 38th edition of the Rongali Bihu celebration by the Sangha. Dr Nilakshi Khataniar, president of Asom Sangha, started the proceedings for the evening with a welcome speech. A minute’s silence was observed for the departed souls. The Assamese community in Canada lost Chandana Barua (wife of Sri Mridul Barua) earlier this year. The president then welcomed the new individuals, families and the new-born into the community fold: Akash Baruah, Rona Bhuyan, Urvashi and Palash Thakur, Aditee and Rahul Kumar, Jayashree Gohain and Subroto Chakrabarty; babies Nikita (daughter of Gitimoni and Jitu Baruah), Abeer (son of Suranjita and Mausum Hazarika), Madan (son of Manash & Mallika Goswami), and Arush (son of Nitumoni and Raju Deka). The guests were treated to a variety of mouth-watering delicacies: pithas, ladoos, cakes, samosa, idli-vada, and many more.

Jahnu Barua to step into Hollywood Monday, April 21 @ 07:09:21 MDT by mkadmin2 (17 reads) | Anonymous writes "NEW DELHI: Veteran filmmaker Jahnu Barua, whose "Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara" brought him international acclaim, is all set to direct a Hollywood production based on a story related to his birthplace Assam.
"My next project will be an Indo-British co-production with an Indian as well as international cast," Barua told PTI, without naming the actors.
The film named "Homing Pigeons" will be shot in Assam and the UK.
"The shooting will start sometime in September," he said. Barua plans to finish his first international project by March next year.
"But there will be no shift in my focus of film making. My works will always be designed for mass distribution," he said.
Based on a story by Barua, the screenplay has been written jointly by him and Ferozi Anjirbag.
"It is my own story and has Assam as the backdrop," he said, adding the film has both Indian and British producers.
His latest Bollywood venture "Har Pal", slated for July release, has Bollywood bigwigs like Dharmendra, Preity Zinta, Shiney Ahuja and Lillete Dubey in its star cast.
